Harold is Photon Design’s semiconductor device simulation tool for designing and optimizing active photonic components such as semiconductor lasers, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), and electro-absorption modulators. It couples optical, electrical, and thermal physics to predict key performance metrics—including I-V and L-I characteristics, spectra, modal gain, and high-speed response—helping teams shorten prototyping cycles and improve device efficiency.
Harold provides physics-based material and quantum-well models, supports parameter sweeps and optimization, and offers clear visualization of fields, carrier densities, temperature profiles, and refractive index changes. It integrates smoothly with Photon Design’s other products, exchanging data with tools like FIMMWAVE/FIMMPROP and PICWave for an end-to-end device-to-circuit workflow.
Typical applications include ridge-waveguide and DFB/DBR lasers, SOAs, and related III-V photonic devices used in communications, sensing, and integrated photonics research and development.
